Vision for MFL

Our vision for MLF at St. Edward’s Primary School and Nursery is to engage children in an additional language which provides a valuable education, social and cultural experience. Children will foster their curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world around us by being immersed in the language through reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Intent

The selected Scheme of Work (SoW) offers a carefully planned sequence of lessons, ensuring progressive coverage of the skills required by the national curriculum as well as giving them an Insite to another culture.

Through our SoW, we intend to inspire pupils to develop a love of languages and to expand their horizons to other countries, cultures and people. We aim to help children grow into curious, confident and reflective language learners and to provide them with a foundation that will equip them for further language studies.

Implementation

A linear curriculum has been chosen to allow opportunity for children to gradually build on their skills and knowledge alongside the introduction of a new skill. The SoW enables children to express their ideas and thoughts in French and provides opportunities to interact and communicate with others both in speech and in writing. At the heart of our MFL Curriculum is the desire to expose children to authentic French, so the scheme offers regular opportunities to listen to native speakers.

In Lower KS2, children acquire basic skills and understanding of French with a strong emphasis placed on developing their Speaking and Listening skills. These will be embedded and further developed in Upper KS2, alongside Reading and Writing, gradually progressing onto more complex language concepts and greater learner autonomy.

Impact

Our pupils will enjoy the experience of learning a foreign language and acquire new skills which they can further develop throughout their school careers.

The clear progression through the key stage will enable children to articulate what they have learned and make links to prior learning. Revisiting key vocabulary and grammatical features will enable pupils to apply their learning using increasingly sophisticated sentences, both spoken and written. Ongoing assessment informs teachers and supports their planning, lesson activities and differentiation. The progression documents support this.

Varied learning experiences will ensure that languages are celebrated throughout the school community. This provides a context for language learning and develops the children’s understanding of different cultures, giving them purpose and meaning. Monitoring will show that cross curricular links are being made, supporting children to develop their mother-tongue literacy skills as well as cross-curricular features such as numeracy, thinking, geographical skills, and cultural understanding.

MFL in the Early Years

MFL is encompassed in the EYFS through Understanding of the world which includes People and Communities, The World and Technology. At St Edward’s, children will develop their understanding of different languages and cultures through topic-based learning.
